Recognizing the country's dependence on imported oil and gas resources, Government of India has accorded high priority to securing India's energy security objectives through the strategic storage of crude oil programme which envisages construction of underground rock caverns for reserve supply of crude oil to deal with possible disruptions in the supply chain.
Under Phase-I of the programme, NIL is executing 5.33 MMT crude oil storage projects at three locations viz. Visakhapatnam, Mangalore and Padur as follows:
- Padur : 2.50 MMT
- Mangalore : 1.50 MMT
- Vishakhapatnam : 1.33 MMT
